Xenophobia: 6,000 Nigerians will lose their jobs if MTN leaves Nigeria

MTN Nigeria says about 6,000 Nigerians will lose their jobs if MTN is made to leave Nigeria. Head of Communications MTN, Mr Wale Goodluck said this while reacting to calls by a protest group in Edo state yesterday that the telecommunications offices in Nigeria will be shut and their installations attacked if the xenophobic attacks in South Africa continues.

Mr Goodluck said there are only 12 expatriates working for the company in Nigeria compared to a workforce of 6,000 Nigerians.
"So if people go ahead with their threats to attack our facilities, what that means is that we may be forced to close down the business in Nigeria and about 6,000 Nigerians that make up 99% of our workforce will be unemployed.
Then, when you look at our support chain, we have about 500,000 Nigerians gainfully employed. So, boycotting our services simply means destroying so many other Nigerian businesses and making over 500,000 other Nigerians to lose their jobs. This business supports a lot of businesses across the length and breadth of Nigeria. Many of the businesses that are affiliated to South Africa are in the retail space, supporting the growth of Nigeria and employing so many Nigerians. We see no revenge of Xenophobia and we commend the role the Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has played; at least there has been no fatality on the part of any Nigerian,” he said

If SA refuses to put her house together, we'll send their businesses in Nigeria packing and bring in new ones. What nonsense!

Nigeria is over 150 million, so is it 6000 Nigerian MTN gat? You guys have long gone take us for a ride. MTN should send messages to whatever place they call their country home and stop the killing.

Mr. Wale Goodluck please note that there can be no gain without pain. Africans are dying like goats in the hands of South Africans and you say people will lose their jobs in Nigeria if Nigerians retaliate, what a shame! Does this mean that the South Africans owners do not benefit from the the venture called MTN! Closing down MTN in Nigeria and other African countries will make the SA government more responsible. How else do you get South Africans that have business interests in other African countries to exert pressure on their government to be responsible and stop the attacks

Anonymous said...

shut off mr goodluck. do the Zolu guys know that some of this foreign companies do employ their own nationals to and now they are suffering. note that MTN NGN generate about 28% to 30% of the entire MTN GROUP profit from Nigeria and hence its a big blow for them if they still think like fish.

This is a speech made by former South African President P.W Botha to his cabinet about 27 years ago. It was reprinted by David G Mailu for the Sunday Times, a South African newspaper, in 1985.

I quote…

” We are not obliged even the least to try to prove to anybody and to the blacks
that we are superior people. We have demonstrated that to the blacks in 1001 ways. The Republic of South Africa that we know of today has not been created by wishful thinking. We have created it at the expenses of
intelligence, sweat and blood……We do not pretend like other whites that we like the blacks

The fact that, blacks look like human beings and act like
human beings do not necessarily make them
sensible human beings. Hedgehogs are not porcupines and lizards are not crocodiles because they look alike. If God had wanted
us to be equal to the blacks, he would have created us all of a uniform colour and intellect.

But he created us differently:
Whites, Blacks, Yellow, Rulers and the ruled. Intellectually,we are superior to the Blacks;
that has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt over the years. I believe that the
Afrikaner is honest, God fearing person, who has demonstrated practically the right way of being. By now every one of us has seen it
practically that the Blacks cannot rule themselves.

Give them guns and they will kill each other. They are good in nothing else but making noise, dancing, marrying many wives and indulging in sex. Let us all accept that the Blackman is a symbol of poverty, mental inferiority, laziness and emotional incompetence. Isn’t it plausible?

Therefore that the Whiteman is created to rule the Blackman……And here is a creature (Blackman) that lacks foresight….. The average Black does not plan his life beyond a year”.

* So tell me , despite the insult, has the black man with current events in south-Africa been able to prove this man wrong after 27yrs.......??

unfortunately, the South African business operating in Nigeria are not own by the black South Africans that are killing their fellow black Africans. If the businesses are closed it will not affect the black South Africans, it is the Nigerian employed in this companies that will lose their jobs. So there is no need to shut down their businesses!

You should not threaten Nigerians with the number of people that will look their Job. If MTN leaves the country today, other organisation will come in and employ. Therefore, people will gain their employment back.

Is it ok for them to continue business as usual here when Nigerians are hounded and killed in SA? 6,000 jobs yes, but they are no missionaries; they are carting away our money(Dollars!!) in their truck loads on a daily basis. What goes round comes round; their leaving will be the gain of Nigerians, a million fold. It is only a matter of time and adjustment. The big question is why is this terrible imbalance in Nigeria's relation with South Africa? We keep rubbing and soothing their back and they keep poking into our eyes. Why? Their big corporations in Nigeria cannot play innocent or blackmail us with job loss. They should learn diplomatic shuttle, lay it on as it is to their people or get packing. MTN in particular builds schools etc all over SA, pays huge tax etc. So it has a sphere of influence there.

How much will they lose in form of revenue? Is Nigeria not their biggest cash cow in Africa. 95% of the so called 6,000 staff are contract staff with no benefits and wicked conditions (being perpetuated by fellow Nigerians thinking of their pockets only). Anyway its not your fault, its NLC that has failed the Nigerian workforce by not protecting their interest. Go to better countries and try that rubbish.

Better call your govt. to order.

SHUTUP!!!WHO TELL YOU SAY GLO AND ETISALAT NO GO EMPLOY ALL OF THEM

Unknown said...

Mr Wale is saying rubbish. He's saying that cuz of his selfish interest. MTN been a telecommunication company in Nig and SA they are suppose to voice and comdemn the attacks on fellow blacks. If MTN is shut down in Nig it will give room to indigenous businessmen( Dangote, Tony Elumelu etc) to establish a formidable telecommunication that will employ more than the 6000 people with better salary base. What the 1% expatriate earns in a year is worth more than 2,000 Nigerians earn in the company. Just like multichoice they fought tooth and nail to destroy and displace an indigenous satellite company( HITV) just becose they were showing EPL matches and their subscriptions cheaper than that of DSTV. Nigeria still remain their highest subscribers in the whole of Africa yet their tariff is so high in Nig. Just recently DSTV want to increase to almost 100$ for complete subscription whereas countries like Angola & Namibia is paying less than 70$ for the same complete subscription.

He is an idiot. So because South idiotic Africans have not harmed any Nigerians then we should be glad. If matters were reversed those he think they will allow Nigerians set up a booming business in their land? Is he a moron, hasn't he been following the way south Africans have made life difficult for Nigerians and every other Africans. Yet we allow them thrive on our soil. I really don't blame them, I blame our idiotic government cos it's like we are at their mercy. Left to me every one should leave that cursed County and boycott all their products then we'll see if a man can be an island.

Unknown said...

I don't believe MTN employed 6000 nigerians, even if they did, this is emotional blackmail, so we should allow our people die because of jobs?

Nelly Udoh said...

And so does what? Even at that, it's just for a while. Sooner, networks like Glo and Etisalat will expand thereby giving opportunities for many other Nigerians. Let the worst happen. Just go and stay in your country we will still survive, we will even grow stronger. We are Strong Nigerians!

MTN IS TOO BIG TO LOSE YOUR THREATS WONT AFFECT THEM THERE ARE OPERATING IN MANY COUNTRIES IN AFRICA AND ASIA,THEIR BIGGEST MARKET IRAN, SO YOUR PEOPLE STAND TO LOSE JOBS IF YOU THREATEN TO SHUT DOWN MTN, I THINK YOU PEOPLE ARE JUST OVEREACTING,

Anonymous said...

Another story for the gods. The 6,000 Nigerians you talking about will be absorbed by GLO, Etisalat and Airtel.

We Nigerians do not appreciate d threats of unemployment, as much as we are absolutely aware of d consequences. Unemployment or not we'll derive no pleasure in driving out an investor from our country(we are all africans). Mtn & other south african companies in nigeria are influential enough to talk sense into d south African government to act fast in preventing xenophobia, & put in place a plan to stop this horror ones & for all, bcos we believe one good turn deserves another. Gosh I have so much to say but never mind! Mtn just don't try to threaten us with unemployment, be sensitive enough to help us. Wld it be so bad if u put inplace an anti-xenophobia organisation in sa? With armed forces who calm situations like this before it become an issue, or better-still suggest this to your sa government. This has happened twice now, not putting a prevention plan inplace is like experimenting with pple's lives & security.

These Hypocrites should Shut up. It's Sad though. I feel so pained. Yes, 6000 people will loose their Jobs. Myself Included. But how many of us are Real MTN Staff.??? The entire company's work force is outsourced. So we are Basically all contract staff. Without any form of. allowance. Just a Basic salary.

This large scale of workforce outsourcing IS NOT the case in South Africa. These guys milk our Country and equally treat us Nigerians like Trash, both in our Country and theirs.

I know any Business strives to be profitable, but If a Company can earn over N749 Billion after Tax, why should more than 85% of its Staff be contract? Its a case of monkey dey work, Baboon dey Chop!!!

I'm not saying the Company should be shut Down, But my point is MTN Management should not make it seem they are doing its Staff a favour. Bcos we receive Peanuts compared to what they earn...........If MTN Nigeria goes down, sincerely na those Management Staff go feel the Pain more.

MTN is making billions of naira every month in Nigeria. Remember that we are the giant of Africa. What MTN will loose won't be compared to those that will loose their jobs. We won't miss them. There's Glo, Etisalat and Airtel to serve us; and other telecommunication companies will spring up before u say Jack. So we won't take to that threat.

Nigerians are very funny and highly hypocritical. If we could execute 'Ghana Must Go' how then is 'Nigeria Must Go' now so wrong. Illegal immigrants are a big problem in SA and the people are right to take action. Nobody should be killed but what happens when illegal immigrants refuse to leave?

IS BETTER TO LIVE WITHOUT A JOB THAN TO DIE SHAMEFULLY IN ANOTHER MANS LAND

Air tel, Etisalat, glo etc would take MTN's place and absorb them all

can we all calm down pls? Mr. Goodluck's statement is not a threat. He was merely stating the obvious. SA businesses (MTN) inclusive employ thousands of Nigerians directly and enable thousands of businesses too. You close down their business, you would be putting Nigerians, working on Nigerian soil, out of work for the actions of South Africans in South Africa. Make we dey try use our brain small now? Anh! Should the SA businesses be pressured to pressure their own govt to stop the violence? Yes of course. Should we also directly pressure SA govt to stop the violence, again the answer is yes! BUT there are ways to go about this without endangering the livelihoods of Nigerians living in Nigeria. Lets stop all this cheap and illogical reactionism in the name activism. Abo oro l'an so fun omoluabi.....

Useless talk! No show of empathy at all!!! If they leave Nigeria, then their infrastructures would be used by Glo or others Nigerian Telecoms Company, which can be boosted to their full potential. Am sure new Nigerian owned telecom companies would spring up too.
He is talking about 560k Nigerians loosing their jobs. What about the millions they rake in every day? Poor service, Expensive rates, High rate of casual workers, etc.

MTN must go!!!

Haba! We just have to condemn any form of xenophobia, rather than calling names and reacting to a comment made by one person, who may have been quoted out of contest or misinterpreted. I urge everyone to condemn xenophobia b'cos it's very sensitive and be very careful of our reactions.

Guys! MTN already condemned the Xenophobic attacks how will they now threaten Nigeria again? Dem no fit! This story has been twisted jare.

Mr. Wale Goodluck,So by your explanation,Nigerians in South Africa should be sacrificed because 6,000 Nigerians are being employed by MTN. This is arrant nonsense.
